'This exciting programme combines two great forces: the symphony orchestra and current technological developments. Half of the concert will feature composers performing, through the aid of technology, with the orchestra, in works such as Synapse and two new works for symphony orchestra and electronics by myself and Michael Alcorn. The second half will include Scelsi's beautifully textural work Quattro Pezzi per Orchestra (1959), followed by my first short orchestral work, One piece of chocolate per bar (2008).' Karen Power

'After Jimi Hendrix, the electric guitar became an instrument with incredible sonic range and power. In this new piece I've harnessed the power and colouristic possibilities of this amazing instrument and allied it to the power and colouristic possibilities of the modern symphony orchestra. The electric guitar is the most popular instrument in the world today, yet this is not represented in the "classical" world. In this new piece I wanted to show off the instrument in this orchestral context, and the rhythmic and improvisational skills of the great guitarist Rick Peckham.' Ronan Guilfoyle

'African ensemble music is often characterised by a democratic principle which is in complete contrast to Western music: each player plays an equal and opposite part to adjacent players. The individual parts only make sense when combined together. This was my cue when writing this piano concerto: the piano part is meaningless without the orchestra and vice-versa. I treated the wind orchestra similarly, with each player complementing the other.' Kevin Volans

'This concert is about ancestry, kindred spirits, influence and, most importantly, ultimately about continuity. The common thread through is the concept of "chorale" – a tune with a accompaniment, a context. The context (light) may change, but the tune remains.' Garrett Sholdice
